WARNING: The Dangers of the One Stop Shop Vendor | North Carolina Wedding Planner

I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “what exactly is a one stop shop vendor?” There are many vendors that offer additional services, as long as the services are related to their field. Is it okay that your venue provides catering? Absolutely! Does your photographer offer videography? That’s terrific! A vendor that offers additional services in their own field can save you lots of time and money.
Does your DJ offers floral design & photography? That’s a problem! A one shop shop vendor offers everything, or close to it. You may run into the florist that claims to be a photographer and a wedding planner or the caterer that can provide you with everything except the venue – some will even provide the venue! These are the vendors to stay away from.
Think about it, would you go to your accountant if you were sick? Would you ask your doctor to do your taxes? I doubt it. I’m guessing you would seek out a specialist in their field.
Vendors like this are unable to focus on providing the best service, they’re just providing some type of service. Quantity and quality of services do not go hand-in-hand here. Choose a vendor that is a specialist in their field to help guarantee that you receive top-quality service.
Have you used a one stop shop vendor? Was it a negative or positive experience? We would love to hear your thoughts, but please refrain from using the vendors name. J

Buying the Perfect Wedding Gift | North Carolina Wedding Planner

Normally my posts are directed directly to brides and grooms planning their wedding. Today, let’s take a slightly different path and explore the extra fun part of weddings for the guests…buying the perfect gift.

For married couples it is especially excited when a close friend gets married. It’s always a joy to have another married couple to hang out with and to socialize with. But when that special day comes, what will you buy that very special friend?
What is a traditional bridal gift? Mixers, blenders, lamps, money, etc. Traditional gifts are usually something the couple will need for their new home.

Today many couples live together before they get married so when the wedding rolls around they don’t need any of the traditional gifts. So what is a non-traditional or less traditional gift? A spa trip, a nice bottle of wine, or a coffee table book that would interest the bride and groom.

If you’re rolling in dough and you want to do something elaborate, send the couple on their dream honeymoon, make a house payment for them, have a hot tub installed in their backyard – the sky’s the limit if there’s no budget. J

Running on a tight budget? How about a scrapbook for the couple, a CD of their favorite music, or even a DVD slideshow of pictures of the couple.

While finding, or making, the perfect gift can be a lot of fun it really doesn’t matter how much you spend or how much time you spend on the gift as long as you’re there to share in their special day.

A light fall breeze swept through the ceremony as the Megan serenaded Dan with Rascal Flatts' "God Bless The Broken Road". Megan also treated all of the guests to a line dancing performance at their outdoor reception.

And They Loved Happily Ever After | North Carolina Wedding Planner

While I was browsing my favorite site, Pinterest, today I stumbled across the most beautiful photo. It originated from my favorite blog, Style Me Pretty, and just yelled my name!

This would be beautiful at an outdoor wedding. It would be a great photo op during the reception. You could use a photo of the two of you on it for thank you cards and afterwards you could display it in your yard. What a beautiful reminder of your very special day.

Honey Ceremony | North Carolina Wedding Planner

It seems like every couple is searching for the perfect way to make their ceremony unique. The unity candle used to be the perfect way to do that, but as more and more couples used that the “newness” has worn off. The sand ceremony seemed like the perfect solution for awhile but even that has lost some of it’s “uniqueness”.

So what can you do? How about a honey ceremony? I’m sure you thinking, “Well, what is a honey ceremony?” Well I’ll tell you.

During the ceremony you will have a small bottle of locally produced honey for you and your love to each dip a finger into. You are each invited to taste the sweetness of the honey. This is to symbolize that you vow to be sweet to each other every day of your marriage. This would be a great way to help customize your vows and pledge a love that is as sweet as honey.

And to tie it all in, you could give local honey products for your favors. What a great way for your guests to take home a piece of your wedding.

You could also incorporate this into your anniversary and share a taste of the same locally produced honey every year to renew your promise and remember your vows with your partner each year.

Here are a few tips for planning your own honey ceremony:

1. Avoid sticky fingers – have small spoons to taste the honey instead of dipping your fingers

2. If you’re having a destination wedding, remember to provide favors smaller than the required size for airline carry-on baggage.

3. Be sure to talk to your Officiant about the honey ceremony. They may even have a few ideas to help personalize it even more.

Choosing Your Wedding Planner | North Carolina Wedding Planner

So you’ve decided to hire a wedding planner and you have a consultation set up…now what? What questions should you ask? How will you decide between the planners you’ve narrowed it down to? How will you know which planner will be the perfect fit for your wedding?
When you’re researching wedding planners you may not see a big difference in their services. Many planners offer similar services, which only makes it more difficult to figure out what is unique about them. Your initial consultation with a planner is a great time to find out about their style, check out their portfolio, and ask questions.
A planners website is one of the best ways to see what they have to offer. Not only can you view what packages and services they offer, but the style of the website should give you some insight into their style. Do they have past weddings featured on their site? If so, check them out. Testimonials? See what past bride’s are saying about them. Obviously a bad review would not be featured on their website, but seeing what these brides have to say is still helpful.

Don’t just stop at their website though. “Like” them on Facebook, follow them Pinterest, and read their blog. You can also look for them on sites like Wedding Wire and read their reviews.
If you’ve done all of this and they still seem like a good fit, set up a consultation. Be prepared when you come to the consultation. You wouldn’t go to the doctor without your illness, so don’t go to this meeting without all of your wedding info.
Know your wedding date. If the planner is already booked for your date, it’s not necessary to waste both your time on the meeting. Have an estimated head count and know your budget.
Have you booked any other vendors? It may be helpful to know if this planner has worked with any of these vendors before.
The planner should come prepared with their portfolio. Look through it and ask questions. It’s difficult to capture a planner’s work in photos so look for elements that stand out to you and ask what exactly the planner was responsible for. What did they create? What was created by other vendors? This will also help with design inspiration and give you a clear idea how this planner will handle your wedding day.
Asking questions is by far the most important and useful thing you can do during this meeting! Do not be afraid to ask questions. It is their job to answer them – this meeting is an opportunity for them to sell themselves and for both of you to see if you would be a good fit together. As you’re researching planners, jot down any questions you think of – you will not remember everything during the meeting and you’ll be kicking yourself later for not asking that one question.
Ask the planner about how they started their business, how long have they been in business, what do they love about weddings, and what can they offer to enhance your wedding.
This meeting is more than a job interview. You’re not just looking for anybody to fill the position of your wedding planner, you’re looking for the perfect fit. The planner you choose should enhance your wedding. You’ll know when you meet with them – you’ll feel it. There will be a personal connection. The planner is looking for that same feeling with you, or at least they should be. You're both going to be spending a lot of time together and you want to click.
Be prepared to talk about yourself, your engagement, your fiancé, and your wedding. Also be prepared to listen to their ideas, what services they have to offer, and their pricing.
By the time you’re nearing the end of the meeting you will know whether this planner is the right fit or not. Go with that feeling. If this planner is the right fit, you should feel like they “get” you, they “get” your wedding vision, and they are ready to help make your wedding dreams come true. You should feel like you had a conversation with this planner instead of a consultation.
It is important that you feel this way about all of your vendors! If you meet with me and don’t get those warm fuzzies than I would happily suggest that you visit another planner in town.

How to Get Your Groom Involved | North Carolina Wedding Planner

Alright brides don’t get offended, I know it’s your big day, but we have to admit that it’s the groom’s day too. Most grooms just want to know when and where to show up, but if you want to get your groom involved, I’ve got some great suggestions!

1. Picking out wedding bands. Whether you’re choosing matching bands or creating something from scratch the groom’s opinion is important here, especially since he’ll be wearing one of them.

2. Thinking about a “co-ed” bridal shower? If it’s warm enough outside, have a girly shower inside and invite the guys outside for a cookout, drinks, and maybe even a game of poker or cornhole. They’ll be wishing they could attend every bridal shower if they were all thrown this way.

3. The marriage license. You can get this without Groomy!  Make sure you find out all of the requirements before you head to the courthouse to apply. In NC, a marriage license is only valid for 60 days so be sure you don’t apply for it too early.

4. Picking his attendants. From the best man to the groomsmen and even the ushers. It is considered courtesy to include a soon-to-be brother-in-law or brothers-in-law. When it comes to ushers, the rule is 1 usher per 50 guests.

5. Picking out groomsmen gifts. This a great way for him to thank the guys closest to him for taking time to participate in the big day. Cuff links & watches are a great idea or maybe even taking them all to a sporting event beforehand.

6. Are you planning to write your own wedding vows? This is the perfect way for him to share how he feels about you and what marriage means to him.

7. Bachelor Party. Are you uncomfortable with the bars & strip clubs? Discuss the “rules” of the bachelor/bachelorette parties beforehand and stick to them.

8. Attire. Give him the say-so when it comes to his tux and the attire for his attendants. Feel free to give your opinion and make sure that it doesn’t contrast the theme of the wedding, but remember that you wouldn’t want him to pick your dress.

9. The Groom’s Cake. There are two ways to involve your groom here. Either let him choose the cake or you can order the cake to reflect his interests as a surprise for him.

10. The toast. Having your groom give a thank you toast at the wedding reception.
